SciInk: The ScienceOnline2012 Science of Ink Tour

NOTE: Most info about the ScienceOnline2012 tours (held on Friday afternoon, January 20th) will be posted later this month. This particular tour, however, is being announced early because some attendees who may want to get a tattoo will need to coordinate with the studio and artists ahead of time.

Science of Ink Tour: Dogstar Tattoo Company w Carl Zimmer (30 people)

Join us on Friday afternoon, January 20th, at the Dogstar Tattoo Company in Durham, NC’s Golden Belt district for a lecture by Carl Zimmer on the science of tattoos, a reception & tour of the studio, and the opportunity to get inked (or just watch the process!). Carl will have his book, Science Ink: The Tattoos of the Science Obsessed available–and we can probably convince him to sign a few ☺

This isn’t your typical tattoo shop. When Carl Zimmer first saw the photos, he declared, “It’s like a cathedral of tattoo parlors.” Dogstar Tattoo moved to its renovated location in the last year. The architect-designed, light-infused, art-gallery ambiance perfectly complements Kathryn’s (owner) philosophy for the shop. Kathryn Moore is the artist for one of the tattoos highlighted in Carl’s book. She inked Sherrie Emerine’s Passionflower tattoo (pg 170, 171).

When you register, please indicate if you definitely plan to get a tattoo, might want to get a tattoo, or definitely don’t plan to get inked (but want to observe). Karyn will be in touch with those who want to get inked to help you with some pre-tour preparations.

NOTE: Transportation will not be provided, so tour participants will need to carpool together (30-35 minute trip). Maps will be provided. You will need to grab your box-lunch and be ready to leave quickly, in order to arrive at the tour on time. We’ll get more details to those who register. If you have questions, contact Karyn (@ktraphagen).

  1. My fiance is coming along for the trip, though not attending the conference. We can transport 3 in our car. He would definitely want to watch the process.

  2. Is there a wait-list for this? I definitely want to get a tattoo!
